What Are Tootsie Pops?
Tootsie Pops are a brand of lollipops that have a hard shell and a Tootsie Roll chocolate candy at their center.
Yes, a very unusual candy indeed. Tootsie Pops were invented in 1931 by a company called The Sweets Company of America. Not the most original name for a company, is it?
Well, I think they realized this eventually because, in 1969, the company changed its name to Tootsie Roll Industries and has kept with it since.
The Tootsie Pop is perhaps one of their most unique candy ranges.
They’re a lollipop with a flavorsome hard candy outer shell. But once you’ve sucked your way through it, you find yourself meeting a very different candy.
Which is a chewy chocolate-flavored Tootsie Roll candy. What a way for the company to flog their other candies, hey?
So it’s two candies for the price of one and the setback of only 60 calories per lollipop as well. Not bad going for a candy that is tasty in a variety of ways.
What Are Blow Pops?
Blow Pops are a brand of lollipops that have a hard shell and a piece of bubble gum at their center.
So now you can probably see why these two candies are often compared. Because just like Tootsie Pops, Blow Pops are a hard candy lollipop that has another piece of candy in their inner core.
Except it’s not a piece of chocolate. Instead, Blow Pops are filled with bubble gum.
Blow Mops were originally manufactured and distributed by a company called The Charms Candy Company. You may have often referred to Blow Pops as Charms Blow Pops.
But then, in 1988, The Charms Candy Company was sold to Tootsie Roll Industries.
So they, too, now manufacture and distribute Blow Pops just like they do with their own Tootsie Pops range. Except one has a bubble gum center, and the other has a chewy chocolate center.
Besides their bubble gum centers, Blow Pops have fruity hard candy outer shells that are absolutely delicious.
But what flavors do they come in? Well, I think it’s time to get into all of that.
What Is The Difference Between Tootsie Pops and Blow Pops?
There are plenty of differences between these two hard candy lollipops related to their flavors, sizes, and their packaging.
Alright. There are three key categories of differences there for us to look at. Let’s start off with the most exciting one. The one we all want to know about. The flavors!!
Flavor Differences
Tootsie Pops and Blow Pops both offer candy lovers some flavors that the other does not.
That’s not to say that they don’t share any flavors. They do. But we’ll talk more about these shared flavors later on when we discuss the similarities between the two hard candy lollipops.
For now, let’s start by going through the flavors that each candy has that the other does not.
We’ll start with…

Size Differences
Now it’s time to talk about the size of these two lollipops.
It’s worth noting that all of the lollipops discussed today, whether they’re Tootsie Pops or Blow Pops, can be purchased as single items, in bags, or even in bulk buy boxes.
So, once again, we’ll start with Tootsie Pops.
Tootsie Pops Sizes
Tootsie Pops have a classic-sized lollipop, and they also have a ‘giant-sized’ lollipop for those with extra sweet tooths. Don’t worry; it’s not literally a giant lollipop, just a slightly larger one than the classic size.
A classic Tootsie Pop weighs about 0.6 oz (17g).
Whereas a giant Tootsie Pop is 0.85 oz (24g).
Blow Pops Sizes
Blow Pops have a single Pop size and a super Blow Pop size.
Their single Pops size is 0.65 oz (18.4g).
Whereas their super Blow Pop size is 1.35 oz (38.2g).
Wow! That super Blow Pop size really is super!
So there are differences when it comes to the sizes of Tootsie Pops and Blow Pops.
Their standard-sized lollipops are actually quite similar, with only a 5 oz difference between them.
But their larger versions are quite different, with a size difference of 50 oz.
Right. That’s the sizes done. Now it’s time for the…
Packaging Differences
Now I’m going, to be honest; there’s not much difference here when it comes to packaging.
They’re both colorfully wrapped lollipops, but it is the design that is all different in terms of logos and packaging.
…But it’s a very, very slight difference. Because the reality is that their packaging is actually quite similar, as we’ll soon discover.
What Are The Similarities Between Tootsie Pops and Blow Pops?
Tootsie Pops and Blow Pops share similarities related to some of the flavors available, nature, manufacturer, and packaging.
Despite their differences, these two lollipops have a lot in common. So let’s explore the similarities between Tootsie Pops and Blow Pops.
Certain Flavors
Yes, there were plenty of different flavors offered by both Tootsie Pops and Blow Pops. But now, let’s look at the similarities.
Here’s a short list of flavors the two lollipops share:
- Cherry
- Grape
- Raspberry
Nature
Sure, the inside cores of these two lollipops differ. One contains a piece of chocolate, and the other contains a piece of bubblegum.
But the hard candy outer shells that both lollipops have are actually very similar in terms of texture.
They have a hard outside and a chewy inside. It’s as easy as that.
Manufacturer
As you know from that brief history lesson, I gave you earlier, both of these lollipops are made by the same company: Tootsie Roll Industries.
So that’s another characteristic the two share.
Packaging
You know when I said that the differences in packaging between Tootsie Pops and Blow pops were only slight? Well, I wasn’t kidding.
Their packaging is actually very similar, particularly the style of font used to state the brand name on the wrappers, bags, and boxes they both come in.
If you take a look at them, you’ll see what I mean.
They both use that cool kind of inflatable font. Check it out!
Who Would Prefer Tootsie Pops?
Those who enjoy chocolate more than they do bubblegum would probably prefer Tootsie Pops.
These two lollipop ranges have one key similarity. That is that they’re hard candy lollipops with fruity flavors that taste quite similar.
When it comes to their features and construction, it is the center ingredient that differs between the two lollipops.
As you know, you will find a piece of Tootsie Rolls Chocolate Candy on the inside of a Tootsie Pop once you’ve licked and sucked your way through.
And as you also know, you will find a piece of bubble gum on the inside of a Blow Pop once you’ve licked and sucked your way through.
The flavors and textures of the lollipop are quite similar, so they won’t be significant factors that influence your decision when choosing between Tootsie Pops and Blow Pops.
What will influence your decision is your preference.
What would you rather have at the end of your licking and sucking? Is it a piece of chocolate? Then guess what? You will probably prefer Tootsie Pops.
Who Would Prefer Blow Pops?
Those who enjoy bubblegum more than they do chocolate would probably prefer Tootsie Pops.
The same logic we just talked about in the last chapter applies here.
Do you prefer bubblegum to chocolate? Then you will probably prefer Blow Pops.
Finally
There you have it. After all this time, Blow Pops have been made by the same company as Tootsie Pops.
And that’s not all they have in common, as you now know.
There are differences there, for sure. After all, they are a different range of candy.
Whether or not you prefer one to the other depends on whether you’re more of a chocolate lover or a bubblegum lover.
