The History of Haribo

Haribo sweets have a history that begins in Germany, long before the gummy craze of today. While famous for Haribo gummi bears, the company got its start with dancing bears and licorice sticks.

In 1920, founder Hans Riegel sets up shop in Germany and within two years develops the “dancing bear” which would later become world-famous with the new name, “Haribo Goldbear.” This predecessor of bulk Haribo gummy bears was made from fruit gum.

By the 1930s, Haribo introduced a black licorice stick and licorice wheels which also became famous around the world. By the end of the decade, Haribo employed about 400 employees. World War II took its toll on the company with business dropping dramatically due to lack of raw materials. During this time period, Hans Riegel passed away, leaving his wife, Gertrud, at the helm.

Meanwhile, his son, Hans Jr. was a prisoner of war who was later released in 1946. Hans Jr. entered Bonn University where he earned his doctorate in business science. His dissertation? The role of sugar in world trade. Dr. Riegel and his brother, Paul, rebuilt the family business. Paul, a skilled engineer, invented many of the candy machines in use at the factory including the licorice wheels machine.

By the 1980s, the company expanded to the U.S. bringing with it Haribo gummi bears which took America by storm.
