Do You Need Special Chocolate For A Chocolate Fountain?

The chocolate you need for a chocolate fountain doesn’t necessarily need to have been made specifically for a chocolate fountain, though they do tend to be best.

Chocolate fountains are an object of luxury. So it certainly helps to fill them up with luxury chocolate.

By doing this, you’re not just pairing luxury with luxury, but quite often, you will be ensuring, with the choice of luxury chocolate, that the fountain flows as smoothly as possible.

Now, this doesn’t mean that there is a specific type of chocolate out there that is required for chocolate fountains.

However, there are certain properties that we need to look for in the chocolates we consider for the fountain.

If we don’t do this, then we won’t get the rich, smooth, appealing consistency that is supposed to be found in chocolate fountains.

So what do we need to look out for?

What Makes Good Chocolate For A Chocolate Fountain

Melts Easily

Chocolate fountain chocolate needs to be able to be easily melted and made to be runny. It also needs to be thinned out.

Adding chocolate that doesn’t reach this consistency will result in the fountain being clogged up.

So, you want a chocolate that will be fluid and flow well when melted at the fountain’s operating temperature.

Chocolates that do this will have a high-fat content. This is what makes them go runnier and smoother when melted. So look out for high-fat content!

High Cocoa Content

You also want a chocolate with a high cocoa butter content.

Cocoa butter is also known as Theobroma oil. Because it is an oil, cocoa butter can prevent the fountain’s flow from becoming too vicious, which would also result in clogging.

So what chocolate possesses these properties?

Belgian chocolate almost always completes all of those tasks I have just laid out.

Due to its high fat and high cocoa butter content, it will melt, thin, and flow perfectly. It is just what you need for a chocolate fountain.

At the same time, the flavor of Belgian chocolate, when melted, is amazing, rich with delicious flavors.

Suit Melting

Chocolate wafers are normally great as well as they are designed to suit melting.

You’ll find brands out there, which don’t necessarily have to be Belgian, that are specifically designed for melting. So that might be a good place to start looking.

‘What about the actual type of chocolate?’

The good news is that white, milk, and dark chocolate can all be used in a fountain. So long as they contain high levels of fat and cocoa butter.

What Chocolate Should You Not Use In A Chocolate Fountain?

You should not use chocolate with a low cocoa butter content, big brands, cheap grocery store chocolate, and others too!

Not all chocolate works well with a chocolate fountain. Sadly most of the big brands are included in that.

So let’s talk through some of the flaws in certain chocolates that make them unsuitable for use in chocolate fountains.

Generic Chocolate

The big brands are big for a reason. They’re successful, delicious, and often unique.

But that often means they’re not suitable for using chocolate fountains.

I’m talking about your Snickers, your Reeces, Milky Way, Mars, etc. All of them are lovely delights that we normally relish.

Sadly, they don’t have the necessary properties to melt easily, evenly, and flow smoothly down the chocolate fountain.

They’re just too thick in their consistency after being melted.

So stick to your Belgian, high-quality, specialized chocolates brands.

Cheap Grocery Store Chocolate

Quality is very important when it comes to the chocolate you need to put into your fountain.

So melting a load of cheap chocolate from the grocery store is not a good idea.

Why? Because cheap chocolate has too thick a formulation. Which means it won’t melt easily, quickly, and evenly.

Then once it has melted, its consistency is much too thick and sticky to flow and cascade smoothly down the fountain.

Don’t think that adding lots of vegetable oil to the fountain to improve the flow is the solution. If you add too much vegetable oil, it will spoil the taste.

Chocolates With Low Cocoa Butter Content

Cocoa butter is a key ingredient required in chocolate fountain chocolates.

It is an oil at the end of the day, a useful oil that helps to stop the fountain from clogging by keeping the flow of chocolate nice and smooth.

So please do try and avoid chocolates that have a low cocoa butter content. If you do use these, then the fountain’s flow may, and probably will, become too viscous.

The result is clogging. If the fountain clogs, it won’t work. Your guests will be left disappointed, and the company who rented it out to you won’t be too happy either.

Especially if the clogging leads to long-term damage.

So avoid chocolates with low cocoa butter content.

Chocolate With Toppings

Chocolates that have toppings or bits in them are also a problem.

They won’t melt as well as the rest of the chocolate it is encompassed in, which will cause unnecessary and easily avoidable problems.

Also, if they haven’t melted properly, then they could clog up the fountain. As you know, a clogged-up chocolate fountain is a problem.

Other Types of Chocolate

Avoid Almond Bark. Although delicious, it will melt to a consistency that is far too quick to flow smoothly.

Also, avoid chocolate that is used for coating foods. These chocolates will also melt to be too thick.

Finally

You now know exactly what chocolate you need to look for.

Your guests are going to be so very lucky to enjoy that luxurious chocolate…

…so, too, is your fountain!
